Cat on a Leash, at the Beach and on the Dashboard
Was already sold—not so much with the backstory, but with the pics that came with it. This, our exclusive Animal Blog Board decided, is what this space is for: the stories that come with our stories—which tell us about our co-habitating creatures, ourselves and Monterey County.But it actually got better. There was a rescue, underdog/cat element to it.
"We saved Pyewacket when she was just 2 weeks old from the ditch behind our house in Augusta, Georgia," the email continued. "My husband and I were out on our deck when we heard her cries and saw a hawk circling the sky above the ditch where she was. We walked down and she crawled out from some thrush, eyes all matted, screaming for her mom.
"She was no bigger than your hand and back then her coloring was gray. It was a Friday afternoon and all the vets were closed so we brought her to Petco, where they checked her out and said she looked pretty healthy, but definitely dehydrated so we ended up buying all the supplies to keep her, including a bottle to feed her.
"We knew Pyewacket was a special little kitty right away, she was was so sweet and never fussed. My friend had a tiny puppy and Pyewacket loved him! She was always picking on him because she could. I started walking her on a harness when she was 2 months old, even though my husband said I was crazy, but she loved it!
"When she was 5 months old we moved here to Monterey from Georgia, it was a long four-day trip of sneaking our 2 cats in and out of hotels without getting caught ( for some reason most hotels will allow dogs but not cats, they say for allergy reasons...) but little Pyewacket was so well behaved the whole trip, including long car durations. Our biggest problem was she wanted to lay on the dashboard which was too distracting. She loved getting out at every tourist spot and walking around.
"So far Pyewacket loves life here in Monterey, we have a house with two yards that she would hang out in all day if we let her. She also enjoys going to the beach. She gets a little worked up around dogs but other than that she loves it—it's a huge sandbox, her ultimate play land!
"She loves playing with the seaweed on the beach. So far she has been to Carmel Beach, Julia Pfeiffer Beach but so far I think Monastery Beach is her favorite because its quiet and she likes the little river stream.
"We had to keep her on the leash at Pfeiffer because she decided to climb up the side of the cliffs! Pyewacket is fascinated by water and loves to play in the sinks at home but she knows the ocean is huge and powerful so she fears and respects it.
