You might believe this epidemic of cupcakes is insignificant and easily explained. It’s the recession, stupid. We are simply doing what any person whose standard of living has been squashed like a cartoon bug under the heel of cartoon capital would do. We are eating ourselves to death at The Little Cupcake Company. There is no story here but comfort-eating.
And, if you don’t trust John Lewis, trust Allsopp’s equally girly cousin Cath Kidston, whose shops are selling 65 per cent more cake stands and peg bags and milking stools than they did last year. Cath is becoming huge – even Wales is not immune to her flowery charms.
Now I could travel everywhere John Lewis delivers and ask women who used to gaze at glass ceilings like crack snipers why they are quilting and spraying bits of jam everywhere. But they will only tell me they enjoy it, and it relaxes them, and this will irritate me, because I expect people to analyse the things they do, even if they do them mindlessly. They will not unpick this mystery. So I must.
Our nostalgic obsession is no flash in the pan. Magazines have long been extolling the virtues of Mad Men’s ultimate Stepford housewife Betty Draper. Indeed, Mad Men, the American drama set in the Fifties and Sixties, has just been commissioned for another three series, as well as winning another batch of awards earlier this week. What seemed like a mere moment in the zeitgeist seems to have grown into something far more permanent.
Part of it, I am sure, is as harmless as Benzedrine. It is soft-furnishing Luddism, a response to being fed up with Apple and the dull, pale lines of technology and the ugly porn it sprays everywhere. It is a reaction against the Nineties period of non-taste, when everyone seemed to live in white Habitat flats, as if they were sitting in pedal bin bags, waiting for something interesting to happen. Just give me a bit of pink, 2011, amid this sea of pixels and white.
It is also a response to living in cities. It is no coincidence that the most fashionable and expensive parts of London look like Cotswold villages with more buses. Richmond, Islington and Hampstead could all be Tetbury, if you close your eyes. Cupcake mania allows a woman to imagine herself in a nostalgic rural idyll, without actually having to look after a cow or deal with its issues. The past is comforting in times of fear, for no better reason than you know its outcome already.
