Perhaps the earliest Aegean settlements are what we call today cave houses. These houses are built inside the rocks and mountains and usually include domelike roofs. Also, many of them have narrow façade and long spaces inside. Santorini is no exception to that rule and possess a lot of cave houses. In fact a lot of Santorini visitors specifically ask to book cave these houses which nowadays are transformed into luxury hotel rooms.
According to locals the cave houses were constructed on the cliff by ship crews which were trying to survive from pirate attacks and abnormal weather conditions. Many others insist that these cave houses were used as stables for the mules and other animals.
The architecture of the cave houses includes two main rooms. The first room contains the kitchen and a living room while the bedroom is at the back. The two rooms are separated by a rock wall with openings to let the air and light enter the back of the cave house.
The light enters the house through the main door which is in fact is the only source of light available. Usually the main door can be found in the middle or to the right of the house, while a skylight at the top and the windows which are on the left side. Due to specific construction of the houses the ventilation is quite problematic, however because of very good insulation of the walls the temperature inside is stabilized at about 18 Celsius degrees. The bad ventilation also creates problems of dampness and that – why it is unhealthy living in some of these houses for a long time.
To provide better ventilation and light shedding inside the cave houses the roof has semi-cylindrical form. Their role is very important especially during the warm days that due to their height the warm air is concentrated at the top and leaves easily from the skylight. Other “inconvenience” is that bathroom can be found usually outside.
If you are lucky, you will witness the specific building technique that Santorinian builders still use till today in traditional house building. This technique includes application of mud (Santorinian dirt and water) on the walls along with some small parts of red rocks that are added for the reinforcement of the mixture. Few of these builders’ uses pressed cement with red or white color to cover all floors and surfaces of the internal and external spaces. On rare occasions and if there is a space available in front of cave houses you will find a small garden where herbs and flowers were planted adding an extra note to the already colorful environment of the island.
