E3 2011: XCOM preview -- a PC classic reborn

Still frequently appears on lists of favorite/top PC games of all time—and according to Wikipedia appeared "twice #1 on IGN 's list of Top 25 PC Games of All Time (2007) (2009).”

The fundamental story of the game pits the human race against unknown alien forces that are invading the earth. The early X-COM games were basically turn-based strategy titles primarily based upon resource management, character development, technology research, and strategic turn-based combat.

XCOM reborn 2K Marin’s version of X-COM loses a hyphen, keeps the aliens (called The Outsiders), and gains a new perspective (first person). But it’s not your typical FPS game and still integrates many strategic, tactical, and other elements from its predecessors.

“We want you to bring your brains to the fight, not just bullets,” says Gray during the E3 2011 XCOM demo.

Similar to the early XCOM games, you command a roster of agents each with their own special abilities that you can use in the FPS portion of the game. Some abilities demonstrated in the demo include the ability to disrupt alien technology (causing shields to falter, for example), create a defensive shield, or create a battlefield diversion.

Agents also gain experience and you can spend experience points earned to improve their abilities.

Another feature retained from the original games is the ability to tactically select missions in a non- linear fashion. Do you rescue the captured scientist so he can augment your research, or perhaps save a town of civilians? Or maybe capture a town with tactical military importance instead? You decide—and reap the rewards and/or consequences of your decisions.

The Demo The demo opens with a grainy, color film of a typical town in 1962. “We set the game in 1962 because it’s a great backdrop for telling a story about fear of the unknown,” Gray explains.

The video shows a cheery 1960’s town. Children ride bicycles, people mow lawns, and all is well in idyllic 1960’s America—until the arrival of an other-worldly, floating obelisk. Townsfolk vanish into thin air, and we catch a glimpse of a housewife through a window—right before her face dissolves into something alien.

The film ends and you, XCOM commander William Carter, arise from your desk to get briefed by Agent Barnes—your talent manager for special agents that can be selected to accompany you on missions. Barnes describes some fellow agents, and then takes you to your tactical adviser Angela. Angela provides you with Intel on your various mission options.

New LRX–Long-Range X Bullet® | Barnes Bullets

The all-new Long-Range X Bullet® (LRX) line is adding four new bullets to Barnes’ already vast bullet selection. Designed after the best-selling Tipped Triple-Shock® X Bullet® (TTSXTM), the new LRX bullet design increases B.C. values by increasing ogive and boat tail lengths to improve the bullets’ long-range ballistic performance. For the hunter who is confident in long-range hunting, the LRX will fill the niche of this new hunting craze.

LRX bullets will continue to be manufactured with the proven 100-percent copper, lead-free bodies. The bullet’s polymer tip initiates expansion, causing the nose cavity to open instantly on contact doubling the bullet’s original diameter while creating four cutting petals that wreak extensive internal damage. Multiple rings cut in the shank relieve pressures and virtually eliminate copper fouling, while contributing to the bullet’s outstanding accuracy. Even at long-range, these bullets produce pass-through penetration while retaining virtually 100-percent of their weight. Exceptional performance means clean, quick kill.
