278th getting new commander

The 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment, the largest unit of the Tennessee Army National Guard, including soldiers living in Marshall County, will have a new commander after ceremonies Sunday in Knoxville.

Col. Jeffrey H. Holmes is an architect with the Brentwood-based firm of Hart Freeland Roberts who lives in Murfreesboro and led the regiment since 2006. He will release his command to Col. Franklin C. McCauley who's served as the deputy regimental commander and commanded the 2nd Squadron, headquartered in Kingsport.

McCauley's installation as Holmes' successor is at 2 p.m. June 12, in West High School's football stadium, 3326 Sutherland Ave., Knox-ville.

Holmes commanded the regiment during its deployment to Iraq in 2010, and the 3rd Squadron, headquartered in Cookeville, during the regiment's deployment to Iraq in 2004-05. Earlier this year, he was named commander of the 230th Engineer Brigade, headquartered in Jackson.

McCauley is a special agent with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. He brings 30 years military experience to the job. He graduated from East Tennessee State University with a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice in 1985, and earned his master's degree in criminal justice in 1987 at Eastern Kentucky University.

In 2004, McCauley deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom as the commander of 2nd Squadron, 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment, and again in 2010 as the 278th deputy commander.

The 278th has units stretching from Kingsport to Memphis. It has more than 3,700 soldiers in a support squadron, a special troops squadron and a fires squadron. Among his various awards, McCauley has the Bronze Star.
