India free trade talks 'proceeding well'
Key talks free trade with Indian counterpart (1:34)The Prime Minister's negotiations over a free-trade agreement with India seem to have gone well, as John Key was treated to the full pomp and ceremony of a state welcome in Delhi.
Key has been speaking to his Indian counterpart, Manmohan Singh, about a deal which could be worth $3 billion to New Zealand over the next few years.
"The Prime Minister and I have reviewed the status of our negotiations on the meeting on the bilateral free trade agreement, these are proceeding well and in the right direction," Singh said at a press conference earlier today.
The agreement will mean more Indian people would be able to work in New Zealand, particularly in technology, software and engineering jobs.
But Key said that won't take jobs away from Kiwis.
"They're the same concerns that were voiced when we in 2008 signed the FTA with China and you look at it and you say, 'has that actually been the result?' and the answer is no," he said.
India has a population of 1.2 billion people and is growing in wealth, Key said one area of spending will be infrastructure including roads and airports.
"We are going to spend in the order of $20 - $25 million over a five or six year period rebuilding Christchurch," he said.
"They're going to spend one trillion US dollars over five years."
Welcome to Bollywood
John Key also visited a Bollywood film set today following the signing of a film co-production agreement with India.
Yesterday Key signed an agreement with the Indian government that will lead to more Bollywood films being shot in New Zealand.
He said it will offer greater certainty to investors looking to fund co-productions here.
The Indian film industry makes three times as many films as America.
Today he visited the set of The Players, part of which was filmed in Queenstown.
Last night Key and wife Bronagh were the special guests at a lavish banquet attended by the who's who of Indian society.
The dinner, at the residence of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, featured prawns, Indian delicacies, and Kiwifruit.
Former Black Caps captain Stephen Fleming was on hand when Key announced a new sports scholarship and academic exchange programme between India and New Zealand yesterday.
The programme will include a number of scholarships for Indian students to study sports qualifications in New Zealand universities.
