Summer comedy films

The series spans almost 40 years of classic comedy films, from 1960 to 1998. July will spotlight American comedies, while August will focus on British comedies. Some of the greatest comic film actors will be featured such as Peter Sellers, Shirley MacLaine, Eric Idle, Gene Wilder, Kevin Kline, Janie Lee Cutis and Zero Mostel.

The series kicks off on July 3 with the original 1968 version of “The Producers,” directed by Mel Brooks. The satire focuses on a Broadway play intentionally designed to fail. The only problem is, its is so campy that it sells out every night. "The Producers" stars Gene Wilder, Zero Mostel and Dick Shawn.

The film for July 10 is 1982's "Diner," set in 1959. As the decade is about to strike midnight, five men in their early 20s resist falling into adulthood by seeking refuge in their beloved Baltimore diner. Written and directed by Oscar winner Barry Levinson, "Diner" stars Mickey Rourke, Kevin Bacon, Paul Reiser and Ellen Barkin.

On July 17, the series will screen "The Apartment" (1960). An office “nobody” tries to climb the corporate ladder by lending out his apartment to company executives for their extra-marital affairs. "The Apartment" won the Oscar for Best Picture, stars Jack Lemon and Shirley MacLaine and was written and directed by the legendary Billy Wilder.

The July 24 film is "Murder by Death" (1976), Neil Simon’s ultra-witty whodunit spoof of the world’s most famous fictional sleuths (Jane Marple, Poirot, Charlie Chan and Sam Spade). The film stars Peter Sellers, David Niven, Truman Capote, Maggie Smith, Alec Guinness and Peter Falk.

On July 31, 1965's "A Thousand Clowns" offers a hilarious story of a 1960s middle-aged free spirit who refuses to grow up — until he is forced to. The film stars Jason Robards, Barbara Harris and Martin Balsam, who was nominated for an Oscar.

The series continues Aug. 7 with "The Full Monty" (1997). Six out of work steel workers in Sheffield, England form a striptease act a la The Chippendales to bring in extra money. The only question is. are they willing to go all the way to … The Full Monty? Starring Tom Wilkinson, "The Full Monty" was nominated for a Best Picture Oscar.

In the odd week out, "Life of Brian" (1979) will be screened Monday, Aug. 15. The irreverent Monty Python gang rewrite the Christ Story documents the life of Bryan Cohen, a Jewish child born right next door to Jesus, who subsequently is mistaken for the Messiah. Eric Idle, John Cleese, Michael Palin and Graham Chapman star.
