Of Tortoises and Hares at Le Mans 24H

In Aesop's classic fable, the Tortoise and the Hare, the tortoise is overconfident and loses to the tortoise after taking a nap halfway through the race. At this year's 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Audi team is attempting to rewrite this tale.

The Physics of Cheating in Baseball

Cheating in sports might be as old as the race between the tortoise and the hare. But not all trickery actually works, especially in baseball. A corked bat can hit the ball farther, right? That's a myth, say physicists studying

Making Teacher Incentives Work

Yes, there is a free-rider effect, but the conventional wisdom fails to incorporate a powerful countervailing effect, what could be called the "tortoise and hare" effect, borrowing from Aesop's fables. Consider the following scenario.

Sunday Morning Coffee: The Tortoise and the Hare at a Fork in the ...

In the race of life, the hare arrives at the fork in the road, sniffs the still air and hops to a decision in a split second: the flat road over the uphill road.

After a half hour of happy hopping, a bend in the trail unveils a steep uphill section.  Meanwhile, her lucky foot tingles in an ominous beat.    She senses that the other route is actually meandering downhill below her.   Auspiciously, a small path appears, heading into the thorny patch of bristly bushes separating the two roads.

Discerning, instinctively, that she might have chosen the harder path, she quickly decides to cut a rough trail through the thorny patch to hop the easy route.

Meanwhile, pacing back and forth at the fork in the road is the tortoise, committing to neither option and taking his time to weigh all the possibilities.

Indecision doesn’t help you win the race.

Most of the time when I think of indecision, I think of a tortoise—a person who literally cannot decide between two options.

Yet, there is an even thornier type of indecision: the hares out there who run by speedy instinct but often pursue distractions down rabbit holes, reneging on commitments and enduring a tough slog to the other side.

It’s not good to be the tortoise or the hare, but its probably a lot worse to be the hare.

Make decisions quickly, but thoughtfully.  And if you realize you chose an uphill path, stick it out because you never know what awaits over that ridge.

The opposite of indecision? Deciding AND committing.
