PEI inn makes royal visit list

Dalvay was built as a summer home around the turn of the 20th century by Alexander MacDonald, a wealthy American businessman and one-time president of Standard Oil.

The MacDonald family lost the property in a tax sale after Alexander's death in 1910. The federal government purchased the property in 1938 as part of the creation of the P.E.I. National Park. Since 1959 it has leased out the building for operation as an inn.

"This will be Prince Edward Island's shining moment on the international stage," Premier Robert Ghiz told reporters.

"It will be the largest media event in our province's history and we need to be able to take advantage of that."

The Charlottetown stop will begin at Province House, and include a carriage ride to the waterfront along Great George Street, the route followed by the Fathers of Confederation in 1864.

A special carriage known as the state landau — built for the first governor-general of Australia and bought in 1911 by then Canadian Governor General Earl Gray — is being flown in from Ottawa for the ride down Great George Street.

The landau — now used by the RCMP — has only left Ottawa once before since its purchase in 1911. Queen Elizabeth rode in it in Regina in 2005.

At Confederation Landing Park, there will be a performance by the Confederation Centre Young Company.

"I feel completely honoured, excited, exhilarated," said Morgan Varis, a member of the company.

From Charlottetown the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will travel to Dalvay, on the North Shore. Prince William will take part in a training exercise in a Sea King helicopter on Dalvay Lake. He will learn a rescue technique used here in Canada — known as the waterbird rescue procedure — and report back on it to his officers in the UK.

Following that, the couple will take part in a dragon boat race on the lake with Ghiz and his wife. After the race there will be cultural presentations on the grounds of the inn.

"Great exposure for us, great exposure for the Island as well," said Michelle Thompson, the events manager at Dalvay-by-the-Sea.

"This is a wonderful, wonderful area."

From Dalvay the royal couple will fly by helicopter to Summerside. Prince William will observe a Canadian Coast Guard demonstration there.

The couple will travel by motorcade to the airfield at Slemon Park, where they will fly to Yellowknife.
