Orphaned cats find calm after Joplin storm

Valerie Chaffin can tell, though, the fluffy gray kitten has grown since she brought him and a litter mate from Joplin to Columbia nearly three weeks ago.

Stormy and Joplin were among five kittens volunteers rescued June 5 from debris behind a hospital destroyed in the May 22 tornado. Chaffin, a Columbia Second Chance board member and volunteer, went to Joplin after hearing the animal shelter there was overwhelmed in the aftermath of the deadly twister.

Not long after arriving, Chaffin met a family who brought in five kittens they had rescued from beneath an overturned sofa.

“They were remarkably healthy, just covered in fleas,” Chaffin said of the kittens.

The most remarkable part, though, was how the unrelated litter of kittens came together, volunteers said.

Only two of the five kittens appeared to actually belong to the same mother cat, Chaffin said; the other three were further apart in age. Somehow the mother cat rounded up all the kittens and fed and sheltered them all.

Once the kittens were rescued, the man sent them along with his children to wait for him on a shuttle headed for the animal shelter. With long sleeves and gloves to protect his arms and hands, the man basically had to pry the protective mother cat from the mud.

“She was kind of suctioned in the mud hole,” Chaffin said, relaying the man’s story. “As he was taking her out, she just died. He was trying to make sure his children didn’t see that.”

Chaffin guessed the adult cat “probably died as much from exposure as malnourishment.”

Diann Stelzer, the medical care foster coordinator for Columbia Second Chance, said she wasn’t surprised by the story or the remarkable measures the cat must have taken in rounding up orphaned kittens. “She kept them dry, fed and alive,” Stelzer said.

Chaffin brought Joplin and Stormy to Columbia, where the kittens received veterinary care. A week later, Stelzer took over caring for Stormy, and volunteer Sadie Burnam offered to foster Joplin. Nearly half of the 80 cats and kittens available for adoption through CSC are fostered by volunteers.

Rhonda Daly and her 5-year-old daughter, Jolee, have since adopted Joplin. The Daly family was buying cat food at Petco, where CSC volunteers had some of the adoptable cats, and Jolee became enamored with Joplin.

Stormy still needs some TLC before he will be ready for adoption, but Second Chance is hosting a general cat adoption event from noon to 4 p.m. tomorrow and Sunday at Petco, at Broadway and Stadium Boulevard.
