A journey of despair traveled with hope

Heather and Aaron Haynes look at their son, David Allen Haynes, after he was delivered stillborn at Shands at UF on Wednesday. When David Allen Haynes was only nineteen-weeks-old in the womb, he was diagnosed with Trisomy 18, a chromosomal disorder where there are three number 18 chromosomes instead of the correct number of two. The disorder is also known as Edwards Syndrome, and while many who have Trisomy 18 are actively living, most children do not survive a full term pregnancy or through the birthing process.

"He was still warm from the womb, and he just looked like every one of our other children — he was so beautiful," Aaron Haynes said through tears. "I was just talking to him and talking to God."

What should have been one of the happiest days in the lives of Aaron and Heather Haynes was one of the saddest. David was stillborn a month prematurely with a chromosomal defect few people have heard of — Trisomy 18 — but one that causes serious medical complications, miscarriages and stillbirths.

From sonograms, the Haynes family knew David had a hole in his heart, his fists were clenched and that he had cysts on one kidney — all traits of a Trisomy 18 baby.

But they also heard the "whoosha, whoosha, whoosha" of his strong heartbeat. And they knew he got the hiccups every night at 9 p.m., loved to snuggle with his umbilical cord, loved to hear Heather sing and read to him, and loved the sound of his father's voice.

The day of David's birth, more than 24 hours after Heather Haynes had last felt him move, Aaron Haynes bathed the limp boy and hoped for a miracle — that David would open his eyes, take a breath and cry out as his other children had done. But that moment never came.

"I said, ‘Son, even though I can't take care of you, you're in my Father's hands now, and dear Lord, please hold my son until I get to come see him," Aaron Haynes, 31, said.

Aaron Haynes said he then handed David, with his dark, curly hair, to Heather. The 30-year-old mother sang the same song to him that she had sung to her other children when they were born, a song from the book "I'll Love You Forever." It's about a mother who sings a song to her son through his life's stages, after which he sings it to her as she lies dying.

"I love you forever, I like you for always. As long as I'm living, my baby you'll be," Heather softly crooned to David through tears.
