A proper San Francisco spot for tea
Kettle Whistle put a new twist on afternoon tea with Saturday's debut of its monthly tea service in San Francisco.
A joint venture between Naivetea of Burlingame and William Werner's Tell Tale Preserve Co. in San Francisco, Kettle Whistle pairs Taiwanese oolong teas with more traditional tea fare, both savory and sweet.
The menu - which features three courses of tea and pastries - was coordinated by the two partners with the aim of choosing teas that "complement or make a nice contrast to the pastry flavor," Naivetea's founder Lawrence Lai said. "It's kind of like wine pairing."
A sample course includes Meyer lemon-hazelnut petit gateaux and rhubarb-olive oil layer cake with hot shan lin shi oolong tea.
Kettle Whistle will be held once a month at the Crescent Hotel in San Francisco with seatings at both 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.

After having tried both Lovejoy's Tea Room AND Crown and Crumpet, I found that both had its own unique flavor. I can't quite choose one over the other. Lovejoy's scenery wasn't as delightful, with their bathroom area definitely needing much improvement, but their sandwiches, tea ware, and tea selections won me over at a great price too. Crown and Crumpet had a much nicer setting, service was delightful, but the price wasn't quite right and their selection didn't offer much. I remember leaving Lovejoy's on a full stomach and that's a winner to me. Couple of notes, we had this one waiter who seemed pretty ticked off when I had asked him if he could clear the mess I made from picking at my bread. He bitched and moaned and went on with some pyscho babble about how this was the part of the job that he didn't like. I was thinking, what a mofo asshole.
