New law requires database for meds with pseudoephedrine

FAIR BLUFF, NC (WECT) – A new state law requires the sales of certain cold medications be entered into a national database in an effort to crack down on people who abuse medicine.

The database will keep track of people who buy any type of cough medicine that has pseudoephedrine, an ingredient used for methamphetamine.  The number of meth labs in North Carolina has increased since 2007, and lawmakers hope this requirement will help bring the number down.

According to Fair Bluff Discount Drug Owner Jack Meares, lawmakers have cracked down on pseudoephedrine.  Customers already have to log their name, address and show ID to purchase medication containing the ingredient.

The governor and attorney general believe the new law, which will go into effect January 1, 2012, will crackdown on criminals who make methamphetamine.

More than a dozen other states, including South Carolina, have a database to track the purchase of cough medicines with pseudoephedrine.
