About 40 Lap-Band patients from Norwood’s Surgical Weight Loss Specialists did something they thought they could never do on June 11.

Each of them crossed the finish line of a 3.1-mile race at the Walpole Village Fair 5K.

“I thought this was a great motivator to get our patients up and moving more,” said Jane Sylvestre, a nutritionist at the Lap-Band surgical practice. “Many have never done a 5K or even run.”

Dr. Adam Glasgow, who performs Lap-Band adjustable gastric bypass system surgery, covered the cost of each patient’s entrance fee.

Decked out in green shirts to represent Surgical Weight Loss Specialists, some walked, some ran and some switched back and forth to go the distance. Every patient that signed up to run the 5K braved the hilly course and finished, Sylvestre said.

Why a 5K?

Gail Deneault had her Lap-Band surgery in August 2008 and has lost 125 pounds. She said running a 5K has always been on her “bucket list.”

“I wasn’t very active,” she said before the race. “A couch potato is probably the best description.”

Deneault, a nurse, said she made a lot of lifestyle changes after the surgery, including hitting the gym seven days a week.

“I never expected to be running unless someone was chasing me,” patient Katie Pavento said. The 36-year-old had her surgery on May 18, 2010, and has since lost 70 pounds. The Milford mother of two said she discovered the “Couch to 5K” program online, which many of the Lap-Band patients used to train, and gradually realized she was capable of covering the distance.

When Ellen Whittmore, 37, hiked the Blue Hills with her daughter’s Brownie Girl Scout troop, she realized that if she could do that, she could run a 5K.

Whittmore had her surgery in December 2009 and has dropped seven sizes.

Getting off the couch

Lisa Hall, 46, who has lost 70 pounds as a result of her Lap-Band surgery in 2008, said “the old me” was her biggest obstacle in getting ready for the 5K.

“I have to push myself to get up and do it,” Hall said, but, “then I would look down at my pedometer and I couldn’t believe the progress.” 

Using the “Couch to 5K” program, Deneault said she started running for about 30 seconds and then walking for about a minute. Gradually she increased the amount of running and walked less and less each time.
