WWII veterans will head Franklin's Independence Day parade, July 3
Both men were selected for this honor by a “lottery” that was conducted by Franklin’s Parade Committee and Bob Fahey, the local veteran’s agent, according to committee co-Chairman and secretary Warren Revell. The lottery was comprised of veterans 90 years and older.Emery, who was a sergeant in the U.S. Army, says he was “very much honored” by being chosen.
His wife, Nancy, says she was “surprised at first” when she learned Emery was selected as a grand marshal.
“I hesitated at first and was going to say no. But [Emery] is going to be 90 this year and [being selected] is quite an honor,” explained Nancy.
Emery enlisted in the service at the age of 21, in September of 1942, just months after marrying Nancy. In February 1943, he was sent overseas during the second wave of Normandy and remained in Europe for 32 months.
His army career took him to many unfamiliar places. Basic training started in Camp Clairborne in Louisiana. From there, he traveled to New Jersey, than headed to Europe. Most of his time in Europe was spent in England, Wales, and France. He was at Utah Beach during the D-Day invasion of Normandy.
Emery was preparing to be shipped to the Pacific when the war ended. Carlucci was a member of the chemical mortar battalion unit. These units serviced 4.2-inch chemical mortars, weapons used for long-range indirect fire.
He was born in Italy on May 13, 1921. In 1937, he moved to the United States and joined the Army at the age of 17. For 3 ½ years, Carlucci saw such foreign lands as Africa, France, and Germany, as well as his homeland of Italy, during combat.
Calucci has lived in Franklin since 1945, where he moved right after the war ended.
Franklin’s Fourth of July Parade has been in existence for the past 29 years, said Revell. This year’s parade will start at the intersection of Cross Street and East Central, go toward the center of town, up Main Street, around the Common, and down Union Street, ending at School Street. The parade will start at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 3, and end at 3:30 p.m. Festivities will take place throughout the long weekend (Thursday-Monday).
Revell expects there will be five or six floats, “with one honoring the memory of Lorraine Doherty who passed away this year.” Doherty was a member of the 4th of July Committee for 28 years and was also active in the Brick School Association.
