Larry Johnston: Detour leads to watershed of learning about Helen Keller
The benefits of traveling by motor home far exceed the space available here to describe them. Please let me offer you just one small glimpse into a typical day on the road so you can see what I mean.
On the morning in question, my wife and I decided to detour off the main roads while going west from Georgia. A person going by car likely would not make a detour. Our happenstance route put us on a path through Tuscumbia, Ala. Tuscumbia turned out to be the birthplace and home of the internationally known personage, Helen Keller.
There never would be a better opportunity to honor the talentedwoman. The four-bedroom home is called Ivy Green and is loaded with memorabilia from her life and work.
Keller was born in 1880 and rendered blind and deaf at 19 months by a fever. After she recovered from the illness, it is easy to imagine the household chaos she caused as a deaf and blind 2-year-old. Few adults, even with a similar infliction cast upon them, could control their behavior either.
Ivy Green is quiet now. The screams are gone. The terror she had after bumping into a painful table or chair is no longer felt, the crashes of the thrown china and silverware silenced.
When Helen was 6, the family hired 21-year-old Anne Sullivan to baby-sit, care for and educate the young girl as much as she could.
What happened next requires the Ivy Green visitor to step outside and walk toward a garden gazebo.
In an attempt to introduce finger spelling or manual alphabet, Anne used the family's well to pump water into Helen's hand while spelling that word. Like a veil lifting, the water and simultaneous spelling of it finally made connection in Helen's mind and opened up the world of communication to her. From that moment on, she had an unquenchable thirst for learning.
The pump is available for inspection by visitors who can pause to reflect on how Helen's past agony washed away and her life started anew.
By 9, Helen was able to master Braille and the manual alphabet. Shortly thereafter, she began speech therapy by feeling the vibrations of a speaker's throat and movement of the mouth and expulsion of air. It took 25 years, but Helen finally mastered speech well enough for others to understand. She graduated from Radcliff College with honors in 1904.
During the course of her tireless career, she gave numerous speeches throughout the world and was able to communicate in several languages. Her recurrent message: to give encouragement to people whose abilities were challenged by misfortune or birth.
