2nd Annual Research Down Syndrome Charity Golf Classic at Bridlewood Golf Club ...
The 2nd Annual Research Down Syndrome Golf Classic, held on Thursday, June 16, 2011, at the Bridlewood Golf Club in Flower Mound, Texas, and “Texas Twilight for Down Syndrome,” an evening reception featuring live and silent auctions, held on Wednesday, June 15, at Austin Ranch in Grapevine, raised $120,000 for Down syndrome research, according to hosts Paul and Patty Watson of Flower Mound. A steady breeze provided more than 130 golfers a slight respite from the afternoon’s high temperature of 100 degrees. Watson children -- Nathan, 9, and his younger siblings, Jenna and Jason, both 7 -- began the event by striking ceremonial first putts. They were joined by Kendall Tignor, 12, also of Flower Mound, and Lyndon LaPlante, 24, of Keller, who offered putting tips to his younger protégés. Nathan, Kendall and Lyndon have Down syndrome. Elected officials and retired professional athletes supported the Down syndrome fund-raising events. U.S. Rep. Pete Sessions was honorary chairman; Gov. Rick Perry and state Rep. Tan Parker, of Flower Mound, were honorary sponsors. Golfers included Claude Osteen, an 18-season pitcher for MLB’s Los Angeles Dodgers, and Ira Terrell, a former NBA center and forward who played basketball at Dallas ISD’s Roosevelt High School and Southern Methodist University. Tony Casillas, a 12-season NFL defensive tackle, and his wife, Tamara, attended the reception. He was responsible for ear-to-ear smiles when he allowed attendees to slip on one of the Super Bowl rings he won as a Dallas Cowboy. LaPlante, a 2006 graduate of Keller High School, played in his second RDS Charity Golf Classic. This time, he was paired with the Keller Indians varsity football head coach, Kevin Atkinson, who made sure LaPlante was an active member of the Keller football program. During his junior and senior years, he dressed for each game, wearing uniform jersey No. 1. After introducing Coach Atkinson, LaPlante recounted his experiences of Friday, Oct. 7, 2005, which he calls “one of the happiest days of my life.” Coach Atkinson and Richland High School Rebels head coach Eugene Wier agreed to have LaPlante run Keller’s first play of the fourth quarter. When a Richland punt was spotted on Keller’s 1-yard line, Atkinson sent LaPlante into the game – to score an unofficial 99-yard touchdown.Down Syndrome Treatment - News
