Dr. Thurston said she will also work with other staff members to establish new disease control, cleanliness, and isolation procedures for the animals to prevent illnesses, such as kennel cough, from spreading. “I think physical health, it is a huge challenge because the population of dogs that come in are primarily strays, many are in extremely poor shape, and they are really wide open to getting sick from passing germs,” Dr. Thurston said. “My role is going to be to work with the team to get the dogs as healthy as possible, as comfortable and stress-free as possible, so as a team we can help them be adopted out more easily.” Being at the pound full time also will enable Dr. Thurston to treat minor medical conditions, such as unattractive cysts and “cherry eye,” that can prevent dogs from being adopted. In addition, the on-site spay and neuter surgeries will allow quicker adoptions of dogs and give Dr. Thurston the ability to closely monitor animals for stress and surgical complications. “There’s such a need there and those animals I think are easily overlooked. There’s nobody to call up and make an appointment and drive them down to the vet. There’s nobody who owns them and has a bond with them yet,” the pound’s new vet explained. “I just feel like they’re deserving of good health care and humane care.” “I do think there’s a place for euthanasia if the animal is suffering and if the animal is dangerous and cannot be safely adopted out into a family,” Dr. Thurston said. “There are some dogs who don’t pass behavior assessments, but maybe if they had a little bit of training, behavior modification, they might make a very great safe pet at some point.
