Antique RoundUp: Buyers find gems at Saddleblanket; appraisals continue today
Steve Williams, an auctioneer and appraiser, was not able to close the sale on a pair of pistols from the 1800s on Friday, but he was pleased he bought a Mexican saddle dating back to the 1820s.
Williams and 20 other professional buyers and appraisers were available Friday in the back room of El Paso Saddleblanket as part of a two-day antique roundup, which ends today.
People brought items to appraise and the buyers made offers.
Williams, who specializes in saddles and Western antiques, traveled from San Antonio for the event. He said a woman with matching pistols and a holster worth about $7,000 did not want to sell her items, but he still purchased a lot of great items Friday. Williams spent $200 for a Mexican saddle in excellent condition valued at up to $800, he said.
"We're expecting (today) will be even better," he said.
Luc Wells, general manager of El Paso Saddleblanket and event organizer, said the first day brought in about 75 people looking to sell or have their items appraised by the nearly 20 different appraisers on site. The idea for the event came about a month ago when the "Antiques Roadshow" stopped in El Paso and drew thousands, he said. They quickly called some of the appraisers and auctioneers in their industry and pulled together their own On the Road Buyer's Antique RoundUp.
"We're always looking for a fun things to do to get people in the door," Wells said.
Buyers came from as far as South Dakota and San Antonio with a specific interest in cowboy, Native American and Mexican antiques and artifacts.
"It's been fun so far," Wells said, noting that today should be even bigger. "All of our buyers have been able to see and purchase some interesting things."
Mark Alvord, owner and appraiser for R.G. Munn Auction in Cloudcroft, said he has been in the industry of appraising and auctioning Native American and Western antiques for 30 years. However, he has never participated in something quite like this before, he said.
"It's been going very well," he said, adding that he appraised about 50 items on Friday ranging from $10 for little items up to $2,000 for an antique belt.
Alvord said he is expecting his most interesting piece to come today. He said he was contacted by someone who is bringing in a historic cedar chest that dates back to 1865 and belonged to Gen. Kit Carson. He said before seeing it, he estimates it could be worth $4,000 and stands to be an important piece of history.
