The Long, Hot Road To Modern Air Conditioning
For some inventions, the light bulb say, everyone knows who invented it.
But the Capitol of the United States on a hot day in July, no one seemed to know who invented air conditioning. Even the statue of a man many call the inventor of the air conditioner was just down the hall.
After an hour or more research, Mike Veselik, of Chicago, came close to knowing.

1850: John Gorrie, a physician who studies tropical diseases, says that people in cold climates do not get malaria. Not realizing that it is transmitted by mosquitoes, he built a version of air conditioning that uses a small motor to cool the air and release it into patient rooms.

"I know the doctor from Florida has come with her, trying to stop people from having fever I think it was," said Veselik.
Again, Veselik is a student of the Capitol, so that some of his knowledge comes from his training tour.
The Florida doctor was John Gorrie. Born in 1803 in South Carolina, Gorrie moved to Florida to study tropical diseases. He noted that Northerners did not have yellow fever and thought it might have something to do with climate.
He started to use ice to cool the rooms of patients "and later developed what many call the basis for the modern refrigerator and air conditioning.
There is even a state park and museum in Apalachicola, Florida, dedicated to him.
"The people of Florida [are] very grateful to God to give Dr.Gorrie talent he had to invent the ice machine and refrigeration and air conditioning, "said Willie McNair, a park ranger and Gorrie Museum State Park.
