The United States Coast Guard Academy announced that Lili-Joy Simon, of Kingwood, has been recognized for superior academic achievement and leadership potential. Simon, who attended Kingwood Park High School, has accepted an appointment to attend the academy and will be sworn in as a member of the Class of 2015 on June 27.

Lili-Joy is the daughter of Howard and Nancy Simon.

Chevron Phillips Chemical Company LP’s Kingwood Research and Technology Center has awarded its 2011-2012 Chevron Phillips Chemical Dependents’ Scholarships to Samuel Gee, a recent graduate of Kingwood High School.

The annual scholarship program offers scholarships to employees’ dependents company-wide, including 25 total undergraduate scholarships and five total graduate scholarships. Samuel is the son of son of Jeff and Karen Gee, of Kingwood.

“Education is a top priority at Chevron Phillips Chemical,” said Dr. Mary Jane Hagenson, vice president of research and technology. “We are proud of the success of our employees’ children and are pleased to invest in their future through this scholarship program.”

During the scholarship selection process, students’ academic records are carefully reviewed, as well as other factors, including leadership and participation in school and community activities, special honors, work experience, stated goals and aspirations, and unique personal or family circumstances. Scholarship applicants are also asked to provide recommendations from their advisers, teachers or employers.

Sarah Cocker, of Kingwood, was one of 82 students who received the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree during convocation and hooding exercises for Oklahoma State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine on Saturday, May 7. Cocker is the daughter of Jill Cocker, also of Kingwood. Following graduation, Sarah will join the Central Texas Veterinary Specialty Hospital in Austin.

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln granted degrees to approximately 2,800 students at commencement exercises May 6 and 7. Among those were Kingwood residents Erich Allen Eisenach, Master of Arts, and Anna Marie Murray, Bachelor of Science in business administration.

The following Kingwood students received degrees in May from Southwestern University: Christopher Churchwell, cum laude, physics; Timothy Hord, economics and business; and Sarah Woolley, political science.
