San Juan Open begins today

FARMINGTON The San Juan Country Club golf course was full of action on Wednesday. Clones sporting any shade of khaki pants, a bright-hued collared shirt and a white cap filled nearly every slot on the driving range was full, the putting green and cart seat.

Yes, the San Juan Opened has arrived, and 80 professional golfers alongside a slew of amateurs will begin the battle for a $75,000 purse today.

Returning champion Clay Ogden is back to defend his 2010 title while four-time PGA TOUR winner Notah Begay III, The Golf Channel's "Big Break" contestant Kent Eger and other familiar competitors like local Luke Tanner, Justin Roth, Tommy Medina, Jimmie Gunn and Scott Gates all have their eyes on the big check.

Players got their first look at five new tees on the course on Wednesday during the practice rounds and San Juan CC general manager Randy Kahn said the feedback was "overal positive."

"Putting in five new tees, it will have its effects on the scores. I think 15 to 18 (under par) is where the scores will be," Kahn said.

Ogden finished last year's Open at 22-under par. "We've added some length but they can still grip it and rip it in a lot of ways. ... As far as these young guys can hit it, they were hitting 20-yard second shots but now they are going to take 100-115 yard second shots."

One person who was familiar with the former country club course was professional and Farmington native Luke Tanner. This will be Tanner's second SJO as a pro though he played multiple times as an amateur.

San Juan CC was also the home course for the Farmington High School Scorpion golf team, of which Tanner was a member.

"It's always fun to go back to the course you played high school golf at. Nothing much has changed except the pro-shop. .... That's a good thing for me."

Tanner played his practice round on Wednesday without "paying attention" to the score but said his first go at the new-look tees went well. Luckily, most of the course remains familiar

"They added new tee boxes to the holes that were already tough. So, it makes them even harder. That won't be the same, but definitely around the greens, it helps to know those. That could be an advantage," Tanner said.

Golf has been kind to Tanner the past two months, but prior to May things on the links were much different.

"I was struggling with the driver. I couldn't hit it anywhere. I couldn't hit it in the ocean," Tanner said.

Those worries behind him, Tanner has only one goal this weekend.
