On the Homestead: Of hens and humans

We have incredible hens. I love watching them walk around and forage for their food. Right now, we have about 25 hens and four roosters (scratch that — we have three; two roosters fought, one lost), and 20 chicks.

We have two permanent pens for them, plus our proud mobile Chick Chariot, which took a village to build. We hook the Chariot to the lawn tractor and tour one rooster and his hens around looking for a new spot where the grass is fresh — the hens love the adventure. Inside the chariot are nesting boxes for them to lay eggs and a roosting area to protect them at night. Our neighbour, Fred, welded the metal trailer together over one winter. Lea and I built the wooden coop on it. Our friend Barry drew the characters on the chariot, and friends and family painted them.

We separate the fowl into three groups — each group gets a rooster (the guys must be kept separate or they’ll kill each other — see result above). So, the two non-Chariot groups alternate turns every day foraging in the fields and forest for salad and insects, and return to their pens at night when we feed them their cereal. I watched a hen run after a flying insect and just like that she grabbed it out of mid-air with her beak and had herself a nice snack. Another time, I was moving some boards that had spent the winter laying on the grass, and a hen came over and stood next to me to keep me company — or so I thought. Tilting her head sideways, she had a better look at the newly exposed grass as I moved the boards. Every time she saw movement she would dart for that area and pluck out and gobble up insects and worms.

We have several breeds of chickens. The Ameraucanas lay “Easter eggs” (different shades of greens and light blues). We have Barnvelders; they lay the darker brown colours, and we also have a mixture of the less-exotic breeds like Rhode Island Reds and Plymouth Barred, that lay the lighter brown eggs. One of the chores in the spring is to collect warm fertilized eggs for a week, incubate them, and voila, 21 days later, chicks are hatched. Once these chicks have matured at five months, they will start laying eggs and the cycle of life continues. The trick to guarantee hatching results is to collect warm eggs. Last weekend was spent running to collect warm eggs each time my iPhone alarm went off on the half hour.

On Sunday, Lea and I were cleaning out the pens and I said as I was shovelling out manure, “I would like more of the dark brown eggs to incubate to make sure we have these hens in the future.” I don’t know if it was because we were in the coop that made one of the chickens nervous or if she really had to lay an egg fast. Whatever her reason, she walked by my feet and dropped a perfect dark brown egg, and kept walking. My jaw dropped in disbelief, like, did this really happen? Sometimes — rarely, but still, sometimes — you do receive what you ask for.

She physically inhabited the vixen as she shyly accepted a male fox's advances, stalked her prey without mercy — there was an amusing explosion of feathers as she ensnared a provocatively clad hen and rooster — and craftily evaded human traps.

The beauty of Fulaga

Seu is the action a rooster or hen does when it scratches and scatters the earth surface and sand with its claws to look for food. During the traditional ceremonies, I heard them refer to Fulaga as the vanua Dui Seu because of the 100 tiny islands.
