'Fort Apache' cops reunite to remember bad, wild days in the Bronx

Their ranks - and hairlines - are thinner and gravity has taken its toll on once-proud chests.

But tomorrow night, the retired cops of Fort Apache, the Bronx, will gather again to recall those days when the Bronx was burning, fighting crime in Hell Central.

Scruffy the Red, The Riddler, Pin Head, Big Bird and The Head will be there, as will The Whale, The Pope, Cisco, Nutsy, Young Buck and Mad Dog.

The 41st Precinct in Longwood-Hunts Point was one of the busiest precincts in the city 40 years ago, with hundreds of murders and other mayhem within its 40 square blocks.

Often a target of angry mobs, a harried desk lieutenant at the Simpson St. stationhouse on one such night gave the precinct its nickname calling for reinforcements.

The movie "Fort Apache, the Bronx" made it world-famous.

Retired Lt. Bill Rath who organized this year's reunion at the Greentree Restaurant in Riverdale, said the ranks are thinning.

"Most of us are late 50 to early 70s," he said. "We've lost about seven in the past two years."

Rath, who got to the precinct in 1967, said, "It was already a working house, worse than Harlem or Bed-Stuy. It got the Fort Apache name in '67 and up to '75 it was a pretty tough house till most of the neighborhood had burned down. After that it got the name Little House on the Prairie."

A new stationhouse on Longwood Ave. replaced the old one in 1993. Later restored, it's now headquarters for Bronx detective command, surrounded by blocks of new housing.

"Now," said Rath, "you can call it Fort Phoenix."
