Traveling With My Dog
One of the worst things about traveling is leaving my dog, Sherpa , behind.
Mostly because I miss her, but also because I feel guilty uprooting her from our home. Plus, it’s always such a hassle figuring out who’s going to watch her. I can’t bring myself to take her to a kennel where she’ll be locked up every day with a million stinky barking dogs, and I’ve probably maxed out the number of times I can ask friends and family to watch her as a favor.
So Rich and I planned a road trip where we could bring her along. We were excited to take her to the ocean and show her all kinds of new things.
This was Sherpa’s big adventure:
Drove Denver to Billings, MT Drove Billings to Bozeman (stayed 2 nights) Drove Bozeman to Coeur D’Alene, ID (stayed 2 nights) Drove Coeur D’Alene to Vancouver, BC (stayed 1 week) Drove Vancouver to Ocean Shores, WA (stayed 2 nights) Drove Ocean Shores to Hood River, OR (stayed 3 nights) Drove Hood River to Bend, OR (stayed 4 nights) Drove Bend to Twin Falls, ID Drove Twin Falls to DenverAs you can see, this was A LOT of driving.
And it was hard on all of us. I learned that taking a dog on a road trip is a decision that shouldn’t be taken lightly. Here are the things I learned, that are worth taking into consideration before traveling with a dog :
Lodging It’s harder to find good lodging with a dog. Nicer places don’t want pets ruining their accommodations, and if they do allow pets, you have to pay a pet deposit or even worse, higher nightly rates. In a pinch, you can always stay at a Motel 6 because all their locations allow pets, but Motel 6 doesn’t quite fit my criteria for Lux 4 Less .
Dining If you’re driving anywhere hot, you simply cannot stop at a restaurant for lunch and leave the dog in the car. Furthermore, a lot of hotels don’t allow you to keep the dog in the room unattended, so that means no eating out for dinner, either. Or going grocery shopping. Several times we just had to take a chance and leave Sherpa unattended in the room. As much as possible, we loaded our cooler with breakfast and lunch meals, which we could eat in the car.
Stress on the Dog Dogs love routine. They also love to run. A long roadtrip provides neither. Sherpa was on edge in each new environment, especially the first few nights. We tried to stick to her routine as much as possible, in regards to her feeding, walking and pooping schedule, but it naturally got thrown off with long days in the car. And of course, those long days are torture for a dog who just wants to run.
