Newsweek imagines Diana at 50

Is imagining what a woman who died more than a decade ago would look like today a bold and brazen approach to an old topic or a crass and cringe-worthy attempt to stir up controversy and sales? Public opinion seems to be tilting toward the latter in the case of the upcoming issue of Newsweek, which focuses on the late Princess Diana. A photo illustration of the beloved royal, as she might look had she lived, 14 years after her death, is on the cover, with these words on top: "Diana at 50: If She Were Here Now, By Tina Brown." It's the most provocative cover yet for Newsweek under Brown, the British editor who wrote a book on Diana and became editor of Newsweek earlier this year to go along with her Daily Beast duties. The story touches on everything from what Diana's Facebook page would look like to what she'd be tweeting to who she'd be dating. It's imaginative for sure, but is it appropriate? Public opinion seems to be leaning toward no. A poll on the Los Angeles Times web site finds that 71 percent think the cover is either horribly or somewhat inappropriate. TNT's coverage of the NBA playoffs accounted for five of the six most-watched programs on basic cable during the second quarter of the year, but it was once again USA that led the quarter among primetime total viewers. USA averaged 3.01 million viewers during the quarter for its 20th straight quarterly win, while TNT (2.72 million), Disney Channel (2.55 million), History (2.18 million) and Fox News Channel (1.82 million) rounded out the top five, according to Nielsen. But it was TNT's NBA coverage--specifically the Eastern Conference finals between the Miami Heat and Chicago Bulls--that were the quarter's most-watched programs. All five games of the series were among the top six programs of the quarter among total viewers, led by game one on May 15, which averaged 11.14 million. TNT also came away as the leader for the quarter among primetime viewers 18-49 (1.35 million), 18-34 (691,000) and 25-54 (1.33 million). Its five Heat-Bulls matchups all finished among the top seven programs of the quarter on basic cable among all three demos. In total-day, Nickelodeon was No. 1 for the quarter among total viewers, while Adult Swim finished first among 18-49s and 18-34s and TNT led 25-54s.
