Infiniti launches luxury boat project

Car marker Infiniti is embarking on a project to create a boat modified around a QX engine and designed with the luxury, performance and craftsmanship of its flagship SUV.

“The genesis for the Infiniti QX-powered luxury boat project came about when a group of us were talking about our full-size SUVs standing as the perfect luxury tow vehicle — capable of carrying tons of weight, and lots of people and their cargo, in style,” Infiniti Americas vice president Ben Poore said in a statement.

“So what better object to tow than a boat custom-outfitted to QX-inspired standards, starting with its powerful, but fuel-efficient, engine and continuing with semi-aniline leather on the seats, XM satellite radio system with NavWeather and Bose speakers, and signature Infiniti analog clock,” he added.

The first step in the Infiniti luxury boat project is under way with the extraction and maritime prep of the QX engine. With assistance from Infiniti engineers and training managers, a team of automotive technical training program students from Tennessee Technical Center in Nashville and Nashville State Community College removed the 5.6-liter engine and 7-speed automatic transmission from a 2011 Infiniti QX.

Infiniti donated the rest of the vehicle to Tennessee Tech for continued use in their automotive curriculum.

“It's great to involve students from the local community in this project, especially since Infiniti QX engines are manufactured in nearby Decherd, Tenn.,” added Poore."It is our hope that one day students in the programs of the car will learn from the Infiniti QX we donated to the technical center will move to work in our company or service departments to Infiniti dealers."

With the removal of the engine is completed, the Infiniti QX-powered boat project of luxury is now prepared for his debut next season with pleasure.

Just be aware of the actual shape — there is a large block of hollow plastic (some sort of acoustical chamber, no doubt) that extends beyond the diameter of the speakers; they are probably twice as long as the diameter, and 3 or so inches thick. There is an obvious acoustical reason for this, but if you have a small space where a conventional speaker might just squeeze in (if you are just looking at the speaker diameter), these won’t.

What is very clever, however, is these are designed to be blind mounted — so long as the space you want to mount them in has enough depth and radial clearance for the acoustical chamber, you can mount these in tough spots.

what I mean by this is: if you have a surface where you don’t have good access to the rear, you can still put these in, so long as you can fish a speaker wire back there. I have one complaint which is the reason for my average ratings above….

I mounted these into the center console of my bay boat. After making a 60 mile trip down the interstate, averaging 70 mph, I arrived at my destination, whereupon I found that one of the speaker covers had come off. I checked the remaining cover and only then did I realize that that they do NOT as tight as they should to the speaker; without exagerating, the fit is extremely loose. I’m not happy in the least about this. I’m now going to have to contact Bose for a replacement. This really pisses me off.
